Sound waves typically reach a microphone through two paths: from the front or from the rear. When waves from both directions arrive simultaneously, they interact with the diaphragm in such a way that the motion is minimized, effectively canceling out the sound. High frequencies from the rear are often filtered out through RLC circuits, reducing the signal from behind the microphone. Additionally, the microphone's casing blocks off-axis high frequencies, thereby creating the cardioid pickup pattern.
