How to Check if an Electret Microphone Capsule is Working Properly

To check whether an electret microphone capsule is functioning properly, you can use several methods, including multimeter testing, polarity identification, visual inspection of the capsule and pins, and sound testing. Depending on the situation, you can choose the appropriate method for checking.

1. Multimeter Testing Method

  1. Set the Multimeter: Set the multimeter to the R×100 range (or select the appropriate resistance range based on the situation).
  2. Connect the Microphone: Attach the multimeter probes to the two terminals of the microphone (ensure they are not connected to the ground terminal). For a three-pin electret microphone, connect the black probe to pin 2 (typically the source S), and the red probe to pin 3 (typically the drain D).
  3. Observe the Reading: After the multimeter displays a value, gently blow into the microphone (blowing should be slow and steady). Observe the needle movement while blowing. The greater the movement, the higher the microphone's sensitivity, and the better the recording effect. If the needle moves little (or not at all), it indicates poor microphone performance, and it should not be used.

2. Polarity Identification Method

Since electret microphones contain a field-effect transistor (FET), with a diode connected between the gate and source, you can use the diode's forward and reverse resistance characteristics to identify the drain (D) and source (S) of the microphone.

  1. Set the Multimeter: Set the multimeter to the R×1kΩ range.
  2. Measure Polarity: Attach the black probe to one terminal and the red probe to the other terminal. Switch the probes and compare the results. The smaller resistance value indicates that the black probe is connected to the source (S), and the red probe is connected to the drain (D).

3. Visual Inspection of the Capsule and Pins

  1. Check the Pins: Inspect the microphone pins for broken, bent, or corroded areas. Ensure that the pins have good contact with the circuit board or connecting wires.
  2. Inspect the Capsule: Check if the microphone capsule has any damage, deformation, or dirt. Pay particular attention to the grounding terminal, as poor grounding can affect the microphone's normal operation.

4. Sound Testing

The most direct method for testing the microphone's functionality is through sound testing.

  1. Connect the Equipment: Connect the microphone to a recorder, telephone, or any other device that requires audio input.
  2. Sound Test: Speak into the microphone and check if the device can receive and play the sound. If the sound is clear, without noise, and at an appropriate volume, the microphone is functioning properly.
