Advantages and Disadvantages of MEMS Microphones vs. Electret
Condenser Microphones (ECM)
Advantages and Disadvantages of MEMS Microphones:
-
MEMS microphones are resistant to high temperatures and reflow
soldering, making them suitable for direct SMT (Surface Mount
Technology) placement.
-
-
MEMS microphones offer stable sensitivity without variation.
They do not require stored charges or electret materials,
resulting in better product stability.
-
-
MEMS microphones have a flat frequency response curve;
however, they cannot be adjusted based on different
application scenarios, nor can they be designed for specific
directivity patterns.
-
Advantages and Disadvantages of Electret Condenser Microphones
(ECM):
-
ECMs offer high sensitivity and a wide frequency range, with
low harmonic distortion. Their frequency response curve can be
tailored by adjusting the circuit or materials according to
different application scenarios.
-
-
For environmental noise suppression, ECMs are available in
unidirectional or bidirectional designs, offering more
flexibility and effective results.
-
-
ECMs benefit from mature production technology and low cost.
However, they require manual assembly and cannot be mounted
using surface-mount techniques.
